Devastating impact of Tory-led cuts

This Tory-led Government’s callous cuts to our welfare system are having a devastating impact on South Tyneside.

The welfare state was created by Labour so that no one should be destitute and go hungry.

Yet cuts to housing benefit, changes to council tax support, and cruel disability assessments putting people who cannot work on lesser benefits, are leaving people struggling to make ends meet.

And placing harsh sanctions on benefit claimants who fail to carry out the endless requirements imposed on them by Jobcentres is brutal punishment for being without a job that is leaving many people on the breadline.

A new report by South Tyneside Council has highlighted the grave impact these welfare changes are having on families in our area.

Within six months of the so-called bedroom tax being introduced last year, rent arrears in the borough rose by almost 20 per cent.

Over the same period, there has been a 50 per cent increase in people using the borough’s food banks.

These figures show the massive impact on the ability of people to provide for themselves and their families.

But things will only continue to get worse under this vicious Government.

This week alone, I have been contacted by two constituents where, due to welfare cuts, one person has tried to commit suicide and the other has contemplated it!

This is the scale of the human cost of what is going on in 2014 under the Tories, who are taking this country back 100 years.

So there we have it.

Wealthy city speculators almost bankrupt the country.

The most vulnerable and poor are made to pay for it whilst the rich get massive tax cuts.

Typical policies from a bunch of Tories who must be kicked into touch in the 2015 General Election!
