Post Office bosses have revealed the service is to stay within South Shields town centre after rumors of uncertainty.

The Post Office's current site at Keppel Street is set to be demolished as part of the South Shields 365 Regeneration project.

But bosses have confirmed that the company is committed to retaining the branch in a convenient, town centre location.

The current site is shared between Royal Mail and the Post Office which have operated as two separate businesses since 2012

However, in July the Gazette revealed how plans had been submitted for the Royal Mail to be relocated to the site of the former adult training centre in West Walpole Street on the town’s Rekendyke Industrial Estate, but it was unclear as to what would happen to the Post Office.

A Post Office spokesman said: “We will retain the Post Office branch in a prime, town centre location, offering our customers the same range of services. We are working hard to finalise the plans which we will announce in due course.”

The announcement will bring relief to scores of readers who took to the Gazette's website and Facebook page urging the company to stay within the town.

Coun Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “We’re delighted that the Post Office has shown a commitment to staying in the town centre and know that residents who rely on this valuable service will be reassured that it will remain at the heart of the community.

“We’ve been working closely with the Post Office over the past two years to support them with relocation so that we can deliver our South Shields 365 town centre vision.”
