Premier League fans in South Tyneside enjoy among the cheapest football in the top flight, a survey has revealed.

The BBC Price of Football survey - the largest study of its type in Europe - has shown that Sunderland’s lowest single home ticket, £25, is the joint-fourth cheapest in the top flight, while Newcastle’s is only slightly more expensive at £27.

The most expensive match ticket at the Stadium of Light, meanwhile, costs £40, which is the third-cheapest in the entire league, and Newcastle’s is £45.

The survey includes costs at 230 clubs across 13 leagues in Great Britain, and overall, it shows that the cost of watching football has dropped or remained the same over the last 12 months.

At Sunderland, the cost of an under-16s season ticket has more than halved to £69 since the club’s first season back in the Premier League, 2007-08, while 63% of seats at the Stadium of Light are available at concession prices.

Adult season tickets which cost £425 two seasons ago are now priced at £370, while there are also deals in place for tickets in the family zone of the stadium in an attempt to entice the younger generation.

The club’s chief executive, Margaret Byrne, said: “Keeping football at the Stadium of Light affordable to our fans is something that we are fully committed to.

“We wholeheartedly appreciate the sacrifice supporters make when they commit to a season card and give their backing to the team week in, week out and we want to ensure that as many of them as possible can continue to do so, which is why we have a realistic pricing structure in place.

“There have been numerous price freezes and reductions on season cards and many season cards are cheaper now than they were several years ago.

“We have also introduced special season cards such as those in our Family Zone, offering young supporters season tickets from just £25, which is vitally important as we look to introduce the next generation of supporters to Sunderland AFC.”

At Newcastle, meanwhile, the cheapest season ticket is £475, with the most expensive at £710, and at Sunderland, the least expensive is £370, compared to the dearest at £525.

The survey also shows that the cost of a programme at Sunderland and Newcastle home games, £3, is the joint-least expensive in the Premier League, while the price of a pie is also among the cheapest at £3 and £3.20 respectively.

However, Black Cats replica shirts are among the most expensive in the league.

A junior shirt costs £44.99, according to the survey, with only Manchester United charging more, although the cost of an adult shirt, £49.99, is about the average.

At Newcastle, meanwhile, it costs £36.99 for a junior shirt and £47.99 for adults.

The survey even goes as far as to compare the cost of a cup of tea at each of the Premier League’s 20 grounds, and Newcastle and Sunderland’s charge of £2.30 is among the most expensive, with only Liverpool charging more.

Lower down the football pyramid, prices are much cheaper again at League Two outfit Hartlepool United.

The cost of pies, teas and programmes are similar at Victoria Park, but the cheapest single ticket is down at £18, and the most expensive at £20.

The cheapest season ticket is available for £250, meanwhile, and the dearest is £295.
