The new man in charge of South Tyneside’s recycling village has pledged to keep the standard of service high.
Remondis JBT Ltd took over the contract at the centre at Middlefields, South Shields, yesterday.
Graham Palmer, managing director of the firm, said: “The site is a state of the art facility that recycles a high percentage of inputs.
“We are determined to drive this further along while providing excellent customer service.”
Remondis will manage the site, provide the staff to guide and assist the public with recycling and to provide the logistic support to move the sorted materials to the appropriate outlet for recycling or recovery.
The firm will run the site until March 2020.
All staff will be transferred to the new contractor.
Coun Moira Smith, lead member for area management and community safety at South Tyneside Council, said: “With South Tyneside residents being encouraged to recycle more of their waste and the budget pressures facing the council, it is extremely important that we achieve value
for money for our taxpayers and get the best possible deal for the processing of materials.
“We look forward to working with Remondis JBT Ltd over the next few years. They have an excellent recycling record and are committed to working with us to improve the service while helping us to meet our recycling targets and divert even more waste away from landfill.”
The German waste management company was founded in 1934 and is part of a privately-owned multinational group of recycling, water, bio industries and logistics companies, turning over about 12 billion Euros and employing 60,000 staff.
Remondis acquired Bedlington-based recycling operator JBT Waste Services Ltd in November last year.
