Health and Safety watchdogs are continuing to investigate how a man ended up in a critical condition on a South Tyneside housing development.
The man was injured in a JCB digger incident at the Riverside Village, off Station Road in Hebburn, shortly after 11.30am on Thursday.
He was airlifted from the site by the Great North Air Ambulance and taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in a ‘critical but stable’ condition.
Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were called to the area which is currently being developed by Persimmon Homes North East.
A spokeswoman for the HSE said the investigation into how the man became injured is continuing.
The man, believed to be in his early 40s, had suffered serious chest and abdominal injuries.
