Probe launched after body found on Whitburn beach

AN inquiry has begun after a man’s body was discovered at a coastal beauty spot.

Police were called to the beach at Whitburn, near to the former rifle range, just before 7.30am today.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “At 7.26am this morning we received a report of a body of a man had been found on the beach at Whitburn in South Tyneside.

“Inquiries are ongoing and there is no third party involvement.”

HM Coastguard and Sunderland RNLI were called in by the police to help with the recovery of the body.
