And United manager Benitez said: "When you play three games in a row you don't have much time to prepare.

"The response of the players has been fantastic – mentally and physically.

"As a manager, you have to be really proud of them because the way they have approached every game has been perfect."

Newcastle are nine points ahead of third-placed Huddersfield Town, who have a game in hand.

And Benitez is looking forward to being back at St James's Park for the game against seventh-placed Fulham, who beat United on the opening weekend of the season.

"At the moment, we're happy with that (the lead)," said Benitez.

"Every week, everything can change. We have to be sure against Fulham, in the next game, we do what we have to do which is try to get three points against another team that has plenty of possession and creates a lot of chances.

"After so many travels it's important to see 52,000 fans at home.

"I think they will realise how important it is now, even more than before, to stay behind the team and the players every single game."

Newcastle's last league defeat came against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on January 2.
