Rafa Benitez reveals why Newcastle did NOT practice penalties for EFL Cup tie

Benitez's side were beaten 3-1 on penalties after they were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

Of the club's four penalty-takers, only Christian Atsu found the net.

United manager Benitez hadn't worked on them ahead of the quarter-final.

“We didn’t practice, because it is different when you do it in a training session to when you do it in a game," said Benitez. "It is totally different."

Benitez was frustrated his team, dominant for the first 45 minutes, didn't convert any of their first-half chances.

Hull fought back after the break, but the 89th-minute dismissal of Dieumerci Mbokani gave them an advantage going into extra-time.

Mohamed Diame scored against his former club to give United an 98th-minute lead.

But an error from goalkeeper Matz Sels, recalled to the starting XI, saw Robert Snodgrass equalise.

And Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Yoan Gouffran failed to convert their penalties.

“The way that we played, I think that we deserved to score goals in the first half and deserved to score goals in extra-time," said Benitez.

"But when we scored the goal, we didn’t manage the situation properly.

"That is something you can get with experience, and hopefully a match like this will give us that experience and in the future we will do a bit better when we have this kind of advantage. We created so many chances."
