Regeneration of South Shields town centre on the agenda

Members of South Tyneside Council’s Place Select Committee will learn more about South Shields’ positive regeneration progress when they meet on Tuesday.

Committee members will hear about the scheme’s key achievements including the green light for South Shields’ new Transport Interchange, and the fact that The Word and improvements to The Market Place are well under way and are on schedule for completion later this year.

The report will also include an update on the efforts to ensure the future of the Marsden Lime Kilns after funding from Historic England was approved in August last year to allow restoration work to be carried out.

Councillor Nancy Maxwell, committee chairman, said: “The regeneration of South Shields’ is crucial to injecting new vitality into the town centre and to encourage more people to the area to support local businesses.

“It is satisfying to hear that the regeneration of South Shields is making great progress with the recent completion of the external structure of The Word, the North East Centre for the Written Word. With the approval of plans for the town’s new Transport Interchange and family leisure offer now also approved, we can look forward to these developments bringing a welcome boost to the town centre.

“The committee also welcome the good news that funding has been secured for the Marsden Kilns, which are an important historical landmark for both South Tyneside and the wider region.”

Members of the public can attend the meeting, which takes place at 10am, on Tuesday, January 26, at Jarrow Town Hall.
