FAMILIES were given a festive treat when they called in at South Shields Market Place.

Grazing on grassland were two reindeers named Yorick and Axle.

The animals had been brought up from Ripon, in North Yorkshire, on Saturday as part of South Tyneside Council’s festive celebration – much to delight of youngsters.

Charlie Farrege, five, from South Shields, said: “It’s really good and makes it feel like Christmas.” His grandmother, Sally Hamiliton, added: “I think it is a lovely idea to bring the reindeers out, as it’s great the children are able to see something traditional.

“Although Charlie is asking where the one with the red nose is.”

Pamela Eglintine, who was with her daughter Lacey Malcolm, four, said: “I think it’s lovely.

“Lacey loves them, it really helps you to get into the Christmas spirit.”
