A POPULAR South Tyneside cause – which helps to find a cure for cancer – is in the running for honours.

Relay For Life, which is held each year at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow, is now in its ninth year.

So far, it has raised around £300,000 for Cancer Research UK, and organiser Ann Walsh is hoping it keeps growing.

In the meantime, the event has been nominated for a Best of South Tyneside award by Gazette readers, who said “it brings our community together” and “it does so much to raise awareness of cancer”.

Mrs Walsh was delighted at the nomination and said: “I am over the moon.

“It is great that we have got the chance to win.”

“Last year, we had 700 people who camped out in the middle of the Monkton Stadium and the whole of South Tyneside seems to get involved. If you include all of the people who come along, we must have had 2,000 people last year.”

Last year’s event raised £64,000 and Mrs Walsh added: “There are thousands of people who get involved in one way or another.
