RESIDENTS had to be evacuated this evening due to ‘major subsidence’ at their homes.
Occupants were forced to leave three properties in Dean Road, South Shields, at about 7.30pm.
One crew from South Shields fire station remained at the scene for over an hour-and-a-half after being called by one of the concerned occupants at 6pm.
Northumbria Water were also in attendance to investigate whether burst water main at the back of the properties was responsible for the subsidence.
A Tyne and Fire Service spokesman said: “We were called by a resident at one of the properties, one of which is a terraced house and another a house converted into two flats.
“There is major subbsidence in their properties, with cracks on the walls.
“Northumbria Water are also in attendance to investigate whether a burst water main could be the reason for the subsidence.”
The occupants of two of the properties were said to be staying with family and the council have put up the occupants of the other.”
