Police say there is believed to be no third-party involvement in the death.

A report is now being prepared for the coroner.

The man’s body was found just yards from West Boldon Primary School.

Those living nearby spoke of their shock.

A man in his 30s, who did not want to be named, said: “If it’s the person I think it is, he is about the same age as me so this has come as a bit of a shock.

“We heard he was found hanging.

“It’s a nice place around here so you don’t expect to see police and ambulances around.”

Another man who lives in the street said: “I saw the ambulances at the end of the road early this morning.

“It’s sad that someone has died and with it being close to the school. You just be thankful that no children were anywhere near at the time.

“It would have been very upsetting.”

A police spokeswoman said: “At 6.26am on Tuesday police received a report of concern for a man.

“Officers attended and the body of a man was found.”
