Joey O’Brien; West Ham. The Allardyce link meant several Hammers players were linked with a move to the North East. O'Brien, 29, among them.

Arthur Masuaku; Olympiakos. Left-back rated at £7million. The improvement of Patrick van Aanholt always meant this was a long shot. One to watch out for though.

Tom Lees; Sheffield Wednesday. Another defender, the 25-year-old is a centre-back but can also play right-back.

Andy Carroll; West Ham. Always appeared unlikely despite Allardyce's West Ham connection. Would have taken a huge offer and West Ham quickly confirmed he wasn't for sale.

Sandro; QPR. This was always a non-starter for Sunderland, with Sam Allardyce quickly brushing off speculation that he was on his way to the Stadium of light.

Bafetimbi Gomis; Swansea: Newcastle United have also been strongly linked with a move for Gomis who looks destined to leave the Liberty Stadium.

Patrick Roberts; Man City. Manchester City winger, previously played for Fulham, aged 18.
