Revealed: Savings Shields Ferry customers could make in 2017

Nexus, the public body which owns and operates the cross-Tyne service, is introducing a 20p saving on single Ferry tickets and a 30p saving on the cost of DaySavers for those with a Pop Pay As You Go card.

Tobyn Hughes, managing director of Nexus, said: “Passengers want bigger discounts with a Pop Pay As You Go smartcard and we are delivering that.

"The enhanced fare cap has been extended to the Shields Ferry fares for 2017, offering customers even bigger savings on the cost of travelling.

“Most other tickets have been frozen or are coming down in price.

"The Shields Ferry requires an operating subsidy but we are determined that this iconic and very poplar service remains affordable.”

Child fares are being frozen in price, while the standard single fare for customers who don’t have a pop card is to remain at £1.50.

The adult weekly and four-week FerrySavers will come down in price - the weekly price by 20p to £10.30 and the four-weekly by 80p to £36.00.

The only Ferry price that will see an increase in 2017 is the standard Ferry DaySaver, which is going up by 10p from £2.70 to £2.80.

The new fares will come into effect from Monday, January 2.

They revised Ferry fares were agreed by senior councillors on the Transport North East (Tyne and Wear) sub-committee of the North East Combined Authority on November 3.
