Rising star Will Varley joins The Proclaimers at Mouth of the Tyne gig

Will Varley, an up and coming star of the alt-folk scene, will join Scottish legends The Proclaimers at their sold-out North East gig this weekend.

Twins Craig and Charlie Reid are headlining at the Whitley Bay Playhouse on Friday as part of the Mouth of the Tyne Festival.

They will be joined by singer-songwriter Varley, who released his third album, Postcards From Ursa Minor, earlier this year.

The Londoner is an Xtra Mile Recordings label mate of the likes of Frank Turner, Skinny Lister, Beans On Toast and Against Me!

Named one of Time Out's rising stars of 2015, and has had tracks played on BBC Radio 2, 6 Music and XFM, by the likes of Steve Lamacq and Rob Da Bank.

He has a huge summer coming up, beginning with an extensive support slot with The Proclaimers from now, throughout June and into July.

He is also playing three shows with his childhood hero, the 'Bard of Barking' Billy Bragg.

After that there's a run of festival dates including Blissfields, Splendour, Cambridge Folk Festival, Kendall Calling, Boomtown, his annual Smugglers Festival, and a triumphant return to Bestival after last year's successful set.

Autumn will see him embark him on his own headline UK tour, ending with a highly-anticipated gig at North London's beautiful Union Chapel.

Fans would be wise to get to Friday's show early to catch Varley's set, as his songs cover of range of subjects, all with a sprinkling of social commentary, politics and wry humour.

Doors open at 6.30pm, and Varley is due on stage at 7.30pm, with The Proclaimers following at 8.30pm.
