RNLI volunteers have towed a boat which was stranded off the Sunderland coast back to shore.

A crew from Sunderland RNLI was sent out at noon today when a 21-ft vessel suffered an electrical failure a mile away from Whitburn.

The lifeboat crew, which had to be diverted from a training exercise to assist those on board the vessel, towed the boat back to Sunderland Marina.

A statement on Sunderland RNLI's Facebook page read: "Volunteers diverted from training exercise to assist a 21ft vessel which had suffered electrical failure 1m off Whitburn.

"The lifeboat crew took the vessel under tow and safely returned it to Sunderland Marina."
