Road reopened after man falls from bridge over A1

A section of the A1 had to be closed after a man fell from a bridge which crosses the road near the Birtley turn-off following a 10-hour incident.

Shortly after 2am on Tuesday, August 11, concerns for the man were reported to Northumbria Police after he was spotted on the bridge.

Specialist officers attended the scene and due to safety concerns, temporarily closed a section of the A1 between the Coalhouse roundabout and Eighton Lodge, between junctions 67 and 66.

Shortly after 12.10pm, the man fell from the bridge and has been taken to hospital by ambulance with injuries believed to be serious but non-life threatening.

The A1 has now fully reopened and diversions removed.
