The goalkeeper had surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament playing for the Republic of Ireland last month.

Elliot will miss Euro 2016, but he hopes to be back playing later this year.

“Obviously, the Euros is massive to miss out on, and I think it’ll be hard when I’m sitting there watching it,” said Elliot in the programme for tonight’s home game against Manchester City.

“But at the moment I feel like, because I know I could be back playing in September or October, it doesn’t feel like it’s too long away.

“I’m sure I will have dark days in between, but I feel quite positive and I’m just glad to have had the op, because I know that every day that goes by is another day closer to playing.

“That’s a massive plus, I think.”

Elliot, outstanding between the posts after No1 Tim Krul suffered a season-ending injury in October, is desperate for relegation-threatened Newcastle to stay in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old said: “I want the lads to stay up. I want us to be in the Premier League, because it’s where this club deserves to be.

“From a personal point of view, I want to come back and make my comeback in the Premier League for Newcastle and set a few wrongs right, getting us back to where we should be.

“But it’s out of my hands now. I’m just going to support the lads any way I can.”
