Rob Elliot says he's not interested in own heroics if Newcastle fail to win

Relegation-threatened Newcastle were beaten 3-0 by Everton on Wednesday night.

Elliot kept Steve McClaren’s woeful side in the game until the 88th minute, when the visitors conceded the first of two late penalties, but still left the stadium dejected.

“Obviously, it’s good to make saves and help the team out, but ideally you want it to be for a win,” said Elliot.

“It doesn’t really count as much when you go off and haven’t really got the result you want. Hopefully, I can make less saves and we can get more points going forward.”

Newcastle remain 18th in the Premier League ahead of tomorrow’s home game against West Brom and head coach McClaren has demanded a “reaction” from his team.

Asked what went wrong against Everton, Elliot said: “In the first half they started well and we didn’t quite match them. Then, once a team like that gets a goal, you become more open and leave yourself more exposed on the counter.

“I think it’s the start that killed us really. We’ve started games really well recently, and that was the most disappointing thing.

“Once you give them one goal, you’re just trying to chase it and, with their quality and pace on the counter, it becomes more and more difficult.

“Second half we were a lot better, we pushed and pushed, but they still created chances.

“I think we deserved what we got. But we need to make sure we kick-on for Saturday, because we’ve got some new players in, some good talented players.

“So it is still a positive sign for the club with the players we’ve signed and some of the performances, but we need to make sure we get the result on Saturday.”
