Robert Green issues Twitter 'apology' for blunder against Newcastle

Robert Green has apologised to Leeds United fans for the gaffe that led to Dwight Gayle's opening goal.

Newcastle United won 2-0 at a sold-out Elland Road yesterday thanks to two goals from Gayle.

Gayle opened the scoring after Green dropped a hopeful ball forward from Jack Colback.

The striker added a second after the break.

Green took to Twitter after the Championship match to say sorry to Leeds supporters.

The goalkeeper tweeted: "Apologies for first goal. I didn't want to carry it over the line. Great to see Elland Road full. Dust ourselves down for a big game next week."

Newcastle are now five points clear at the top of the Championship ahead of Saturday's home game against Blackburn Rovers.
