For many it’s no laughing matter – but comedy star Sarah Millican is still looking on the bright side of life after turning 40.

The South Shields-born stand-up performer announced her milestone birthday to her 1.49 million followers on social media site, Twitter.

She wrote ‘Home and officially forty, Happy birthday to me’ before later thanking fans for offering their happy returns.

While life may not begin at 40, it will certainly be staying busy as she gets set for another sell-out nationwide tour - including a much-anticipated double date with her home town.

Sarah will be taking centre stage at The Customs House, in Mill Dam, South Shields on October 27 and 28 as part of her tour, Outsider.

Tickets for both shows are already sold out.

Sarah, a former British Comedy award winner, has earned Bafta nominations for her TV hit, The Sarah Millican Television Programme and was named one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK in a Radio 4 poll in 2013.
