THIS is the scene after a woman’s tragic fall from cliffs in South Tyneside
The ambulance service, Sunderland Coastguard and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade were called in to help with the search for a missing woman on Christmas Eve.
Tom Fennelly, of the volunteer life brigade, said: “Unfortunately, our search ended with the discovery of a female at 11am. We had been searching the area, along with police, including a police helicopter and Sunderland Coastguard since 4am.
“We were stood down at 6.30am. Police began the search again at about 8am and we joined the daylight search at about 10.30am.
“The body was recovered 400m south of Marsden Grotto at the base of the cliffs.”
He added: “We were tasked to search the area after a car belonging to the person who was missing was found in the car park near the grotto.
“The body matched the description we were given of the female.”
Police had been searching for a missing woman since Monday afternoon.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said officers were working to identify the woman and inform her next of kin.
