Scrapbook search for family of South Shields police officer

The force is hoping to reunite an old scrapbook with relatives of the original owner after it was found in South Shields police station.

The scrapbook, which dates back to the 1930s, was in a bookcase at South Shields Police Station and includes old newspaper cuttings and photographs.

It is believed to have belonged to Henry Littler, who joined the then County Borough of South Shields Police in 1929.

Mr Littler went on to have a successful career in the force serving as a detective for a number of years before being promoted to sergeant in 1946 and later inspector.

Among the cuttings are Daily Orders, which include promotions and commendations and an old warrant card.

Chief Inspector Chris Grice said: "The scrapbook is fascinating, it really is a piece of history and documents Henry's career as a police officer.

"The newspaper cuttings include incidents he was involved in and details of his promotion, along with some of his sporting achievements and his old warrant card. There are also plenty of old photographs of the people Henry worked with over the years.

"Sadly we don't think Henry will still be alive but are hoping he has some living relatives or there are people who knew him and are really keen to trace them so we can share his memories with them."

Any relatives of Henry Littler should get in contact with Northumbria Police on 101 and ask to speak to the front office at Millbank Police Station.
