Seafood business Latimer’s serves up a new job opportunity

A thriving South Tyneside business is on the look-out for a new starter.

Latimer’s Seafood Deli and Cafe in Whitburn Bents Road, Sunderland, has a vacancy for an apprentice.

And boss Ailsa Latimer is hoping to find someone who will get as much out of the opportunity as Sophie Gray.

Sophie, who has Asperger’s syndrome, produced models of Latimer’s mascot Claude the Crab to raise awareness of autism.

Now she is starting at Sunderland University while continuing part-time with her role at Latimer’s.

“It’s been a great experience fronting a campaign that raises awareness of people like myself,” she said.

Seeing Sophie embark on a university degree has been wonderful and the support we received for the #RewardforClaude campaign has been fantastic.

“I’ve had a wonderful response from people, particularly those with autism or autism-related conditions.

“Latimer’s has also helped me develop work place skills and I’ve been allowed to develop whilst working hard and having fun, which is why I’m continuing to work here whilst doing my degree in ceramics and glass.”

Ailsa is delighted to see Sophie spread her wings.

“Seeing Sophie embark on a university degree has been wonderful and the support we received for the #RewardforClaude campaign has been fantastic,” she said.

“We currently have a café apprenticeship role - which combines the chance to start a career and gain a recognised professional qualification in partnership with Gateshead College.

“It would be great to see someone benefit in the way that Sophie has and others here at Latimer’s, like Gabrielle McCririck, who has completed her apprenticeship and been with our business for five years.

“We’re delighted with the support we receive from our customers, staff, suppliers and the local community in general.

“It’s something we are never complacent about, and we’re always looking for ways we can show our gratitude and play our part as a local business.

Latimer’s has partnered with Master Chef Simon Lilley to stage two ticket-only Coghlan’s Fine Dining pop up Supper Clubs - one tomorrow and the next on Friday, November 16.

“The Supper Club gives our customers the chance to enjoy a great evening out with a wine choice specially selected to accompany and enhance each amazing course,” said Ailsa.
