Search for Good Samaritan who halted purse theft from pensioner in Nook shop

A man who stopped a thief who targeted an 83-year-old woman is being urged to come forward by police - so they can thank him.

Officers investigating the purse theft in South Shields have issued the appeal after they charged a 45-year-old Newcastle man with theft.

The incident happened yesterday at 11.40am in the Boots store at the Nook in Prince Edward Road.

An 83-year-old woman was in the store when her purse was stolen from her bag.

Another man who was in the store stopped the alleged offender and retrieved the purse and returned it to the elderly woman, he then left without leaving his details.

Officers were called to the incident and following enquiries a 45-year-old man was arrested and charged with theft from the person and is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court today.

Police would like to thank the 'Good Samaritan' for his actions and are appealing for him to come forward and make himself known to them.
