Due to a a problem with the electricity supply, attributed to Network Rail, there are no trains between Brockley Whins and Heworth, with replacement buses in operation between these stations.

Trains are, however, running from South Hylton to Brockley Whins, from Pelaw to the Airport and from South Shields to St James.

Nexus bosses had hoped that the problem would be resolved by Network Rail engineers working through the night to fix the fault.

South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck says she will be demanding action from Transport bosses in the wake of the disruption.

Mrs Lewell-Buck is due to meet Transport Secretrary Andrew Jones where she will raise her concerns about what she calls the “continued poor performance” of the system.

She said: ““I am dismayed at the continued poor performance of the Metro week after week, in fact almost daily peoples’ work, education and leisure time continues to be disrupted.

“Worse still, communication remains poor so people are often left waiting for long periods of time not knowing how or when they are expected to reach their destination.

“I am in regular contact with Nexus regarding these ongoing problems, but our area deserves better and a solution needs to be found, that is why I am meeting with Andrew Jones MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Transport, later this month to demand some action.”
