Shields Ferry and Metro services suspended as Storm Ali batters Tyne and South Shields seafront

The Shields Ferry service has been suspended as Storm Ali continues to batter South Tyneside.

A statement on the Shields Ferry Facebook page read: "The ferry is suspended due to adverse weather conditions, please seek alternative travel arrangements.

"We are in the process of arranging replacement buses but there are not any at the present time. Sorry for the inconvenience."

Metro services are also suspended between Pelaw and South Shields in both directions.

Tyne and Wear Metro tweeted: "There are no trains running between Pelaw and South Shields in both directions until further notice . This is due to obstruction on the line. Go North East are accepting Metro tickets in the affected area. Bus services 26, 27 operate between Heworth and South Shields."
