Shops on South Shields estate set to get a facelift

Shops in Whiteleas Way, Whiteleas, have been fitted with new fascias and doorways after a cash injection approved by the area’s three ward councillors.

Now, with the new-look completed, the shops in Nevinson Avenue are set to undergo the same treatment.

Coun Ernest Gibson said: “The scheme is being part- funded by money from the community area forum and other sources of funding.

“The shops had been looking tired for a long time and were in need of improving.

“The feedback from the shopowners has been great. Hopefully, this time next year the shops in Nevinson Avenue will also have the same new look.”

The revamp will include the shop fronts being kitted out with new frontage, as well as the buildings fitted with new fascias.

The two other councillors for Whiteleas are Coun Bill Brady and Coun Doreen Purvis.

Coun Gibson said: “As councillors we are constantly looking for ways to improve the area for the residents who elected us.

“We have recently addressed the issue of potholes in roads on the estate and in the past problems with parking outside Whiteleas shops.

“We can only do this if people give us feedback on what they would like to see happen on the estate and the issues causing concern.”
