The problem initially meant no trains were running in either direction between Bede and South Shields.

Service has now resumed between Bede and Chichester, but is subject to delays and not running to timetable.

A replacement bus service has been extended between Jarrow and South Shields, and tickets are being accepted on the 26 and 27 between Jarrow and South Shields.
