Freddie was on hand to catch both demolition and construction work in South Shields four four decades between the 1950s and 1980s.Nor did the former police officer miss a chance to snap something unusual from up on high, such as a visiting Norwegian brass band from an upper floor of the Town Hall. Then there are pictures of everyday life along busy streets such as Beach Road.Freddie, whose Fietscher Fotos business was based in Albemarle Street, South Shields, after starting in Newcastle, took countless photographs for the Gazette, South Tyneside Council and the Bailey entertainments group. Now daughter Julia Northam is busy collating his extensive archive and is kindly allowing us to reprint many of his images.Today we look at different views of South Shields between the 1960s and 1980s with Beach Road, Crossgate, Fowler Street and the Market Place all in the spotlight.

The slides include comments from readers in response to Facebook postings about Freddie's photos.
