Snow flurries and wintry showers predicted as cold weather grips North East

Police are issuing warnings to drivers as the North East continues to take a battering from the elements.

The heavy winds of Storm Gertrude which have wreaked havoc in parts of the evening are set to die down slightly tonight.

But frost and icy patches are also suppose to creep in, with the Met Office predicting possibly snow accumulations. though mainly over hills.

Tomorrow will be bright at first, but with some wintry showers over western hills. It is expected to get increasingly cloudy through Sunday morning, with rain spreading in, preceded by some snow over hills.

Durham Police and Durham County Council have both warned drivers to stay safe if they are heading west.
