Members of the public will be able to try the 360-degree Oculus Rift technology at an open day run by the Newcastle branch of Reserve paratroopers.

Captain Tim Fleming MBE, of 4th Battalion The Parachute Regiment (4PARA), said: “It’s a fantastic piece of equipment – it’s like you’re up there in the sky.

“It’s the most realistic experience without getting in a plane.”

The event, which starts at 10am and will also feature the RAF and Royal Navy, will include more than a dozen army units from across Yorkshire and the North East.

There will also be a chance for people to join the British Army Reserve.

Sergeant Dave Walker, of 4 PARA, added: “The British Army Reserve gives you opportunities which you don’t get on Civvie Street.

“It offers more than your run-of-the-mill, nine to five job including overseas trips, adventure training and scuba diving.

“You get paid for it too on top of your full-time job, which is a real bonus.”
