South Shields 10k will be Great North Run warm-up

A new run has been launched to give people a warm-up for the world's biggest half-marathon.

Fitness coach enthusiast Luke Adams has devised a 10-mile route along the South Shields coastline – which will take in part of the course of the famous Great North Run.

The event will take place on Sunday, August 14 – a month before the Great North Run – and forms part of the running series put together by Mr Adams.

The 10-mile course will start outside the Sand Dancer pub, go along the Coast Road towards Souter Lighthouse, do two laps around the Whitburn landmark before heading back along the Coast Road – finishing at Gypsies Green Stadium.

Entry to the run is limited to 500 people.

Mr Adams said: “The 10-mile run is just a great way for people to prepare for the Great North Run and to test themselves over a greater distance.

“A lot of people when they are training for the run will go out and do what they think is a long distance, but this will give them a taste of what it will be like on the day.

“They will be able to test themselves and still have time to recover before the run itself.

“We have looked at a few routes and I have been working with South Tyneside Council and come up with this route together.”

Mr Adams has been running since he was 14 and has always wanted to inspire others to take up the sport.

He organises the Monthly Mile, Park Run, women-only run and trail series.
