South Shields art centre looks to put youngsters in the frame

Young artists are being invited to show off their talent as part of a major youth arts festival in South Tyneside.

Children and young people aged between 10 and 25 and are being asked to submit up to three pieces of work for the Takeover Open Exhibition 2018.

The exhibition is part of The Takeover Festival at The Customs House, South Shields, which is now in its fourth year and runs from May 28 to June 1.

The week-long programme of events, aimed at and programmed by young people in the region, features theatre, cinema, music, dance, poetry, hip-hop and visual art.

The Takeover Open Exhibition 2018 will open with a preview and award night in the Port of Tyne Gallery at The Customs House on Monday, May 28.

It will run until Friday, August 31.

Lesley Guy, gallery learning officer at The Customs House, said: “Anyone who paints, draws makes collages or take photos, we want to hear from.

“This is our first Takeover Open Exhibition at The Customs House and we aim to showcase and celebrate the talent of young artists who are resident in Tyne and Wear.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to say they’ve exhibited their work publically.

“We’re busy appointing a panel of creative people to act as independent judges who will select prize winners for each age category.

“The winner of the 19 to 25 category will have their own solo show in Upper Fusion Gallery at The Customs House later in 2018.”

Artwork should be submitted before Friday, May 11 - preferably framed or on stretched canvas and no more than two metres in size in any direction.

All submissions must come with a completed application form.
