South Shields band puts music skills to the test in national contest

A South Tyneside band has played their way to second place in a national championship contest.

Musicians from the 10th South Shields Boys Brigade and Girls Association based at Living Waters Church in South Shields travelled to Stoke to put their musical talents to the test.

The group were competing against other bands from across England and Ireland in the biggest boys brigade championship in the UK.

The band were assessed during their eight-minute performance on their marching, music, smartness and display before judges them awarded them second place.

Captain Dave Cooper said: “All the young people have worked really hard and put in extra practice ahead of the competition. We are all very proud of them.

“I would also like to say a big thank you to David Selby and all the officers for their support and hard work putting it together and to the Community Area Forum for it’s grant to help with our costs.”

The Boys Brigade are now looking for new members to join their group and have launched a new younger section for those aged five to 11-years.

Mr Cooper added: “The Boys Brigade are launching a new section for younger members from the age of five. It’s something we are also running locally.

“We welcome all new members to join us. All people need to do is call in.”

The band will be performing at events over the coming weeks including Westoe Fair, West Park family fun day and South Tyneside festival.

Sessions are held Wednesdays 7pm til 9pm and Fridays 7pm til 9.30pm.
