South Shields cancer charity receives '˜Highly Commended' accolade at awards

A South Tyneside-based charity helping cancer patients has received national recognition from the medical profession.

Representatives from Cancer Connections travelled to London after the service was shortlisted at the British Medical Journal awards.

The event was held in London and is aimed at recognising and celebrating the work done by doctors and their teams as well as projects or initiatives from medically-led teams.

Cancer Connections is based in Harton Lane, South Shields and provides help and support to people diagnosed with cancer and their families.

The charity relies on donations it to deliver a range of service.

Co-founder of Cancer Connections, Deborah Roberts said: “It really is nice to be recognised for what we are doing. Supporting someone with Cancer is not just about the surgical and medical side, they also need their mental wellbeing supported too.

“It is the little things that can make a huge impact on the lives of people diagnosed with cancer and their families.

“And even though we did not win, to be recognised and be highly commended by the British Medical Journal Awards was something else. You can’t explain the pride we felt in being recognised in this way.”

Cancer Connections was shortlisted in the Cancer Care Team of the Year category.

Despite not winning the accolade, the team were ‘Highly Commended’ in the Cancer Care category.

Director of Cancer Connections, Reg Hall, said: “For Cancer Connections to received a ‘High Commendation’ was a significant recognition.

“We were the only volunteer charity chosen and we were taking on the best of NHS innovation - hoping to beat them at their own game.

“For South Tyneside this was a superb achievement and we are very grateful for all the support we receive from our wonderful community.”
