South Shields FC chairman Geoff Thompson has been praised for his generosity after he stepped in to help a group of fans.
The Simonside branch of the club’s supporters had organised a 57-seat coach to take them to Saturday’s game at Consett.
They were unable to get their money back when the tie was postponed, but Mr Thompson stepped in after hearing of their plight on Twitter, and paid for another bus to take them to tonight’s rearranged match.
He said: “They weren’t able to get their money back, and to then pay for another bus to go on Tuesday would have been a bit of a stretch, so I thought it was the right thing to do.
“The fortunate thing with our buses arranged by the club was that we were able to rearrange them at no additional cost, and all those who couldn’t make it to the rearranged game could get a refund.”
Scott Burt, of the supporter group, said: “It was an absolutely superb gesture from Geoff.
“He has made sure we can get to the game, and we can’t thank him enough.”
