A mum is out to get other mothers moving at the double by running a fitness class combined with a childcare session.

Shirley Murray was inspired to start her own business after getting fed up of not only paying for exercise classes but also having to fork out for someone to look after her youngsters while she was at the gym.

For parents that have little or no child care, the answer is simple, they bring them along, but not just to sit in a pram.

Now the 37-year-old from South Shields, is running a class she calls ‘trimmed toned toddlers’.

She holds four classes a week at Marsden Health and Wellbeing Centre.

Shirley, married to offshore worker Oliver, 34, is a mum to Samuel, four, and Joseph, one.

She worked for BT in telecoms, dealing with commercial customers, before setting up her fitness and childcare venture.

She said: “For parents who have little or no childcare, the answer is simple – they bring them along, but not just to sit in a pram.

“I have a wide range of toys set up for the children to play with. Both the children and parents are in the same room, so their child will always feel safe and secure.

“I am trying to help other mams in the area that don’t know that this service is available.”

She said those who attend the classes had already given her good feedback about them.

“I am a mother of two small boys myself, and previously I used to attend a class which cost me £70 for a six-week course.

“One of my children did attend nursery in the morning, but the other I had to pay an additional £6 for every time I went to class. I did try to attend four classes and had childcare cover for one of the classes every week.

“Over the six-week course, I had to pay £18 additional per week, so the total cost overall was £178 for the six-week period.

“This this got me thinking that there must be other mams out there that are in the same boat as me with small children and that I would be able to give them the opportunity to not only exercise but also meet other like-minded mam’s. Their children are also benefiting, by playing and socialising.”

The 50-minute classes are held at 9.40am on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays and 1.10pm on Tuesdays. They cost £4.50 each or five for £20.
