South Shields man on MP threat charge

A man from South Tyneside has been charged with making threats to an MP.

John Nimmo, 28, of Moreland Road, South Shields, has been charged with sending a message causing anxiety or distress.

It is understood the message was sent to Liverpool Wavetree MP Luciana Berger.

A statement from Northumbria Police said: "Northumbria Police is working closely with Merseyside Police after reports of malicious communication to a Merseyside MP.

"John Nimmo, 28, of Moreland Road, South Shields, has been charged with sending a letter/communication causing anxiety/distress."

Nimmo appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court today.

He was remanded until July 27.

Ms Berger, 35, is currently in the running to be the new Liverpool Metro Mayor.

She is the Labour Party's former shadow minister for mental health,
