South Shields nurse can carry on working after theft

Donna McCormack, who worked in the accident and emergency department at South Tyneside District hospital, was caught on camera as helping herself to her mate’s cash on December 20, 2015.

She was interviewed and given a police caution on January 12, after her friend reported it after seeing the footage.

McCormack told the Nursing and Midwifery Council heariing she had been hanging around ‘the wrong crowd.’

She claimed she had distanced herself from bad influences since then and apologised to the victim.

Louise Hartley for the NMC said McCormack had ‘breached fundamental tenets of the nursing profession’ and had ‘brought the profession into disrepute.’

Jamie Morgan, representing McCormack said she was ‘apologetic, remorseful and insightful.’

Describing the theft as a ‘wrinkle’ in a promising career he said the charges ‘did not relate to [her] clinical nursing practice.’

The panel found McCormack displayed ‘genuine remorse’ and imposed a two-year caution order.

This allows her to continue her nursing career unimpeded.
