South Shields is officially one of the hottest tourist destinations in the UK.
A survey of 10,000 home holidaymakers saw the town come in at number 34 in a list of the top 50 UK holiday spots.
The survey, carried out by Pegasus Marine Finance, found that people couldn’t resist the sandy beaches of South Shields for a summer breaks.
Edinburgh emerged the winner, beating London to the top spot in the table – with 15% of those surveyed saying they’ll be visiting the Scottish capital this summer.
The North of England is particularly well-represented in the table - with Newcastle (17th), Durham (30th), Barnard Castle (33rd), and Alnwick (42nd) and Berwick (43rd) all featuring in the top 50.
Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for culture and leisure, said: “We are delighted South Shields features among the UK’s top 50 tourist destinations. We know people come back to our area year after year as we have so much to offer visitors, from our glorious beaches, rugged coastline and hidden coves to our award winning parks, areas of outstanding natural beauty and heritage sites.
“Our annual South Tyneside Festival is also major draw. This three-month long summer event is packed with free live music, open air concerts, family friendly entertainment and activities for all ages to enjoy and our South Shields 365 masterplan also aims to make the town the North East’s premier coastal resort every day of the year.
“We look forward to welcoming many more people to our wonderful borough, both new and returning visitors.”
