A paedophile who abused two children almost 30 years apart from each other has been jailed.

William Henderson targeted his first victim in the 1990s and the second in 2022, when they were both children. The most recent complainant bravely came forward and the police were contacted which prompted the other to speak out.

Henderson, 50, of West Avenue, Harton, South Shields, initially denied indecent assault and sexual assault at Newcastle Crown Court but he eventually pleaded guilty during the trial, after the second complainant gave evidence.

Judge Amanda Rippon sentenced him to four years and ten months behind bars. One of the victims said they still suffer nightmares and panic attacks after their ordeal and added that it was difficult to come terms with being a "victim."

A relative who spoke on behalf of the other victim said they had been deeply affected and had become withdrawn. Judge Rippon told Henderson: "I can't fix what you have done. The sentence I impose will never seem long enough and I understand that completely.

"I can only hope they can move forward, both of them."

Robin Patton, defending, said nothing he gave in defence was designed to undermine what happened and said that Henderson has had an "enduring relationship" with alcohol. Mr Patton added: "He tells me he has been moderating his drink and I hope for his sake and the sake of his liver that he has.

"It's his job what puts the roof over his mother's head. Ironically, it is the thing that puts red wine on his table. Is he capable of rehabilitation? He certainly is. This will impact his life even if he doesn't go to custody for the rest of his natural days."

Mr Patton said Henderson will have a "fairly grim" future to look forward to, which will leave him with "fewer and fewer" friends.
