A seafront park in South Tyneside has been hailed as one of the country’s best.
South Marine Park in South Shields is among a record-breaking 1,582 parks and green spaces from across the UK to receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality by Keep Britain Tidy.
A flying flag is a sign they boast the highest standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent facilities.
Councillor Tracey Dixon, lead member for area management and community safety for South Tyneside Council, said: “With parks providing the perfect location for families during the summer holidays, we are thrilled that South Marine Park has retained the Green Flag for the seventh year running.
“The highly-respected award recognises national standards and highlights that people in South Tyneside are enjoying a green space of the very highest quality.
“It is a jewel in the crown of South Tyneside, much -loved by residents and visitors alike.”

Keeping the park in top condition is a joint effort between the council, ISS Facility Services and volunteers, the Friends of North and South Marine Parks.
Christine Calvert, from the friends group, said: “The park is such a wonderful attraction and our group is always looking at ways of further improving the park so that future generations can enjoy it for many years to come.”
