South Shields pupils to see space station experiments

The children from St Oswalds School will be at the Centre for Life in Newcastle on Thursday to play their part in the occasion.

The first ever International Science Centre and Science Museum Day – organised by ASTC (the international Association of Science and Technology Centres) – with UNESCO, will allow pupils to see how water is recycled on the International Space Station.

Also cures for Malaria and a global cloud experiment to help climate scientists, are just some of the projects under way for the global day to celebrate the current and future achievements of science.

Events will take place at over 200 science centres from China to the USA, including the Centre for Life.

One of the key figures behind the event is Linda Conlon, international chairman of ASTC and chief executive of the International Centre for Life (ICFL), Newcastle.

ICFL is an innovative science village in the heart of the Newcastle.

It combines a university medical research institute; two NHS clinics; biotechnology businesses; science engagement, education, and ethics on a single site.

The unique project has fostered inter-disciplinary collaboration among the 600-strong workforce, achieving spectacular results and resulting in international acclaim.

ASTC is working with UNESCO to demonstrate the role of science as a powerful instrument of global sustainability, peace and development, and its findings will be presented to the United Nations.
