South Shields Sailing Club making a splash with trio of national events

South Shields Sialing Club will host three separate events.

South Shields Sailing Club will be playing host to a trio of national competitions in the months ahead, with the public invited to get on board with the action.

The club, which was launched over 60 years ago, is set for one of its busiest years yet - starting with the start of the national scout sailing regatta in August.

The extravaganza, which will see over 100 scout sailors from all over the country flock to the club’s Tyne harbour base, will be followed by the Phantom Class national championships from September 2 to 4, in which over 50 vessels will take part in three days of closely-contested racing.

In the same month, the UK Laser European Qualifiers will get under way, with a bumper entry list of 120 boats descending on South Tyneside September 17 to 18.

It caps off a hectic schedule for a club which prides itself on being at the heart of the community.

The club is the base for the 3rd South Shields Sea Scouts.

Officials hope the public will turn out in force to watch the events.

Niall Graham, Vice Commodore of South Shields Sailing Club, said: “South Shields Sailing Club is a very active sailing club, based in the Tyne harbour, and we have one of our busiest years ever this year.

“The club has been in existence for over 60 years, and has risen from a small wooden hut to the current impressive facilities comprising training room, members lounge, galley and wetroom , spacious changing facilities and boat store for our eight rescue boats, making it one of the best sailing clubhouses in the North East.”
