South Shields school gets payback for helping charity

The Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Coun Richard Porthouse and his wife Patricia, present pupils and teachers from St Wilfrids RC College with a cheque.

The teenagers from St Wilfrid’s RC College helped raise funds for the Mayor of South Tyneside’s charity, and in return they have been presented with a cheque for a college project.

The Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Richard Porthouse, presented pupils from the Temple Park Road school with a cheque for £475.78 after pupils took part in the Mayor’s charity bag pack at Asda in South Shields.

The donation from the Mayor’s Charity was given to St Wilfrid’s World Challenge Team fund, which was set up to raise money so pupils can carry out an educational expedition to Northern India.

The Mayor said: “I am so grateful for the pupils’ support when they took part in my charity bag pack event to help raise funds for worthy causes within the borough.

“I am delighted that in return I can help them in their endeavour to learn more about the wider world and to help those in need in Northern India.”

St Wilfrid’s World Challenge Team fund will enable a team of five pupils in July to travel to Northern India to work on a water project in a village in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Lynn Watson, St Wilfrid’s RC Challenge Team leader, said: “St Wilfrid’s World Challenge Team feel privileged to have been able to help the Mayor’s charity assist such worthy causes.

“The generosity of the shoppers in South Tyneside and the kind donation from the Mayor will help fund our personal skills development programme.

“The programme will allow pupils to work as a team on a water project in a small village in the foothills of the Himalayas.”
