A busy section of South Shields town centre has been cordoned off after high winds battering the borough led to the partial collapse of a shopping centre roof this morning.
Emergency services were called to Waterloo Square shopping complex, in South Shields, shortly after 11am this morning after part of the roof - between Debenhams and River Island - collapsed due to the force of strong winds.
Police quickly cordoned off Waterloo Square, with dangerous structure signage put in place to warn residents.
Alternative pedestrian access signs were also on display, with shoppers stopped from entering the square by police guarding the cordon.
South Tyneside Council workers were also in attendance, while the fire service were on site to safely secure the scene.
It is not yet known when the cordon will be removed.
