Cricketer Ryan Little has already faced the challenge of the Great North Run three times over - but Sunday’s event is set to be his most emotional one.

For the 21-year-old will be running with the memories of his best friend Liam Curry and his girlfriend Chloe Rutherford firmly in his mind.

The much-loved couple were killed in the Manchester arena bomb attack in May.

Ryan, from Biddick Hall, had known Liam all his life and had been inspired by the cricketer, who played for Marsden, to take up the sport.

And, in return, Ryan supported Liam when he took part in the Great North Run a few years ago, raising funds for the Bobby Robson Foundation.

Ryan will be running the 13.1 mile course in honour of the couple and to raise funds for a Trust set up by their families in celebration of their lives.

I’ve grown up with Liam as our families are really close, so it is going to be an emotional day.

The Chloe and Liam Together Forever Trust aims to support those who have a passion in performance or sport, to nurture their talents through the help of bursaries.

The families are keen to keep their names alive by helping inspiring performers or sportspeople to fulfil their potential - Chloe, 17, had a gift for performing while Liam, 19, was a talented cricketer.

Ryan, who will be tackling the course in fancy dress, said: “We both did the run a few years ago before Liam’s dad Andrew passed away.

“I can remember when Liam was given his number because it was a birthday present from his mam Caroline.

“This will be my fourth great North Run but the first one I will be doing in fancy dress.

“It’s just something I fancied doing and this year was as good as any year to do it.

“I’ve grown up with Liam as our families are really close, so it is going to be an emotional day.

“I am looking forward to taking part, I’m looking forward to showing off the Trust and raising funds which will go towards helping another person chase and achieve their dreams just like Liam and Chloe always did.”
