A town centre store has donated a mountain of clothes to help boost the funds of a group supporting bereaved families in South Tyneside.

BHS, based in Waterloo Square, South Shields, has handed over a variety of items to the Cruse Crew at the suggestion of staff member Jean Costello.

The group was formed last year to raise £30,000 for Cruse Bereavement Care Tyneside to enable the charity to bring its children and young people’s bereavement support service to the borough.

Now registered as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company, the Cruse Crew is now raising funds to provide confidence and resilience-based activities for bereaved youngsters and their families, as well as continuing its support for the charity.

Store manager Steven Birkett said: “It is absolutely fantastic we have been able to help a cause so close to one of our employees’ hearts.

“When we were given the go-ahead to donate the clothes I asked Jean straight away if she knew of any deserving cause, as I know she is active in the community.

“As a company we always help the big national charities, however, we are also interested in helping those locally too.

“Jean has told me all about the Cruse Crew, which is such a good cause, and I was happy to get involved.”

Jean, who is a director of the group, said: “I can’t thank Steven enough for the donation of clothes which we will be able to sell to raise funds for the Cruse Crew.

“To have an employer take an interest and support something which I hold so dear to my heart is just fantastic and means such a lot, not just to me but to the rest of the families too.”
